Both Georgia senators say it's an outrage. "This is absolutely unbelievable!" said Sen. Zell Miller. "We have been in the process of spending $100 million on construction. We just moved the 116th bomb wing to Robins 5 years ago, and now we're just gonna turn out the lights and shut the place down? That stinks!" "I'm shocked and outraged that the administration would pull the rug out under our servicemen and women like this," said Sen. Max Cleland. "I see no rationale for this move in terms of policy. I think the procedure was horrible." Senator Miller says he already contacted the White House and is scheduling a meeting with President Bush. Senator Cleland says he is in touch with the administration. Cleland will visit Robins later this week to talk about this move. The news shook people in Central Georgia, too. Eyewitness News' Nicole Foerschler spoke with Jim Driskoll, the spokesman for the Georgia National Guard. They're the ones who fly the B-1 bombers. He says according to the President's 2002 defense budget, five B-1 bomber wings would be consolidated into two wings. They would move to Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota and the Dyess Air Force Base in Texas. There are eight B-1 bombers in the 116th bomb wing at Robins Air Force Base. All eight of those bombers would be moved. Now, the 116th bomb wing still has funding, but they don't have a follow up mission. According to Driskoll, because they have no mission that puts 550 full time and 590 part time guardsmen's jobs in jeopardy. The President's budget still needs to be voted on. Nothing is definite about the move at this time. Stay tuned to Eyewitness News for more on this developing story.
